Twenty-six students from Edmonson County High School attended YMCA’s flagship program, Kentucky Youth Assembly, in Louisville November 15th-17th. This program allows students to participate in a mock legislative process which includes writing a bill, presenting the bill to a student-led house of representatives, a student-led senate, and an elected governor if passed in both the house and the senate. ECHS students presented three bills for debate at this year’s conference. The first team consisted of Noah Parsley, Jarrett Prunty, and Evan Stice. This team passed by vote in both chambers and was signed by the student lieutenant governor. The second team consisted of Danyale Atwell, Macy Cassady, Josi Morrison, and Maham Shahbaz. Their bill was ranked highly on the opening day, passed one chamber, but was defeated in the second chamber. The third team consisted of Lauren Ballance, Madison Harrison, and Emma Rose Vincent. Their bill was also ranked highly on the first day of debate but wasn’t able to pass in chambers. All three teams worked hard and started preparation in August.
On the final day of the conference, during the closing awards ceremony, Edmonson County High School and its students received the following awards and recognitions: Premier Delegation to the entire group and Outstanding Delegate to Mollie Cassady. Sponsors for this conference were Mrs. Corentha Cole, Mrs. Britney Franich, Mrs. Bridget Simon, and Mrs. Carol Stice.
